A Bulawayo filmmaker has launched a new film school to cultivate creative talent in Zimbabwe’s southwestern region.
Tswarelo Mothobe, a self-taught filmmaker and 2024 Best European Film Documentary nominee, founded Bantu Arts Inc Film Classes after identifying a significant gap in accessible arts education and professional training in Bulawayo and the wider Matabeleland area.
The school aims to be more than just a training ground.
“This film school is designed to grow and cultivate filmmakers’ talent and knowledge,” Mothobe said.
“It aims not only to create new films, but also to implement a social component where ordinarily marginalised and underserved groups are included in training, skills sharing, and opportunities for growth.”
Mothobe indicated that the high cost and limited availability of formal arts education, coupled with the prohibitive expense of equipment, are major barriers for aspiring filmmakers.
“As a self-taught filmmaker, I acknowledge the need for continued learning in order for local artists to compete internationally,” he said, adding that his initiative was designed to bridge this gap.
The long-term vision is a comprehensive, seven-month programme running from January to July each year.

The course will take a hands-on approach.
“Students learn by doing,” Mothobe explained.
“They will learn scriptwriting by being guided through writing scripts, and cinematography by being given cameras and actually shooting their work.”
The curriculum will culminate in a film festival where students can showcase their projects.
Each film making discipline will be taught by industry professionals, who will provide mentorship.
Mothobe has announced an initial six-week course, inviting interested candidates to register for classes commencing on October 13.
His documentary, From Huts to Pots, which explores the art of hut painting by women in Matobo District, earned nominations for Best Documentary Short at the European Film Festival 2024, the Images International Film Festival 2024, and the Zimbabwe Annual Film and Television Awards 2024.
His music videos have also received recognition at the Bulawayo Arts Awards and the National Arts Merit Awards.
