Zimbabwean literary giants unite for creative writing workshop

IN a rare convergence of Zimbabwe’s literary talent, some of the country’s most celebrated authors will host a dynamic creative writing workshop at Harare Girls High School on Saturday.

The event features award-winning writers Memory Chirere, Eresina Hwede, Eve Nyemba and Reggemore Marongedze, offering a one-day immersion for aspiring writers, media practitioners and creatives eager to sharpen their craft.

Registration is pegged at US$20, with an early bird discount available at US$15.

Literary workshops like the creative writing one play a vital role in nurturing and refining creative voices. Chirere emphasised that many local writers begin their journey through self-teaching, but structured platforms can help to polish raw talent to market-ready content.

With sessions ranging from poetry to short stories to screenwriting and digital tools, participants will benefit from hands-on mentorship and practical guidance aligned with current global trends in publishing and storytelling.

“The workshop will be based on starter skills in the writing of poems, short stories, stage and screen plays, and how to use key digital skills to amplify these skills and promote the craft of writing. Many writers in Zimbabwe are self-taught. While this is good, this workshop is meant to enhance and redirect these natural skills alongside trends required by publishers and consumers of literature across the 

globe. 

Among the four facilitators are leading authors, poets, dramatists and digital humanities experts who have mentored many writers in Zimbabwe and have spoken and performed at various regional platforms,” Chirere 

said.

Chirere is an award-winning author known for his thought-provoking works, including Shamhu YeZera Renyu, which showcased his poetic charm and won the Nama award for outstanding poetry book in 2024.

Prominent radio, film and stage scriptwriter Hwede added that the introduction to short storywriting participants will gain insights into crafting compelling narratives and developing engaging characters, while the writing for stage and radio segment will focus on the art of writing for performance, including scriptwriting and dialogue.

Hwede is a prolific writer with a background in communication for development and has been published in anthologies like Speaking for the Generation, contemporary stories from Africa" and has worked extensively in radio and stage writing.

Marongedze ascertained that digital content creation tools attendees discover the power of digital tools in creating captivating content, from blog posts to social media updates. Marongedze, a digital tools expert, will share insights on leveraging on technology in writing.

Nyemba is a Nama nominee and she will be bringing expertise in creative writing to the workshop. She said poetry participants would explore various forms, styles and techniques of poetry writing.

Such gatherings not only pass on technical skills but also build a sense of community and mentorship among writers. As Nyemba, Marongedze and Hwede bring their unique specialisation from poetry and radio to digital storytelling, the workshop is poised to be a transformative space.
