
PROSPECT Lithium Zimbabwe (PLZ), a subsidiary of Chinese firm Huayou Cobalt, celebrated Africa Day in style, hosting sports events as part of its environment, social and governance (ESG) programme while deepening ties with local communities.
The event was held in Goromonzi district where hundreds attended the festivities, including government officials, stakeholders and residents.
They also celebrated through featured football matches that not only commemorated the day but also highlighted Zimbabwe’s cultural heritage and diversity while promoting co-operation between Zimbabwe and China.
Speaking during the event, Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture director of sport Ethel Kambasha applauded PLZ for taking part in community building initiatives that uplift the community by nurturing the youth.
“As part of the company's broader corporate social responsibility (CSR) PLZ has contributed significantly to the Goromonzi community, not only economically but also to the overall well-being of the community through sport and culture, as we are all witnessing today.
“As government, we commend such acts of goodwill from our investors and we are hopeful that the trajectory continues in such a manner.
“As a ministry, one of our mandates is to ensure there is equitable participation in sport and events such as this one are truly commended because they augment government efforts.”
Kambasha emphasised the pivotal role such events play in fostering unity and promoting social unity among diverse communities.

“Our cultural expressions are not merely forms of entertainment; they are vessels for story-telling that distinctly capture our collective identity,” she said.
She commended PLZ's investment in sport and culture as it contributes to community development saying such programmes which target the youth can harness their energy positively while instilling values such as teamwork and resilience.
PLZ ESG director Yu Long said the commemoration of Africa Day helped to deepen Zimbabwe-China relations as the two countries shared historical relations, adding that he hoped the event would promote mutual understanding and respect between the peoples of China and Zimbabwe and build even stronger bonds between our cultures.
“Today’s event features a rich display of Chinese and Zimbabwean cuisine (Ukama igasva), traditional crafts and cultural performances.
“It is not only a cultural feast, but also a moment of deep cultural exchange and the blossoming of friendship. Through this event, we hope to further promote mutual understanding and respect between the peoples of China and Zimbabwe and to build even stronger bonds between our cultures,” Yu said.
He said in future PLZ would continue to deepen its roots in Zimbabwe by strengthening cooperation with government, communities and all stakeholders to promote regional development and broader China-Zimbabwe exchanges and collaboration.
