KARIBA, July 01 (NewsDayLive) -The Zambezi River Authority (ZRA) has announced a crucial step in the ongoing Kariba Dam Rehabilitation Project KDRP. As part of the project, a controlled leakage test will be carried out on Sluice 3 at Kariba Dam on July 2, 2025. The test is part of the project's broader scope, which includes major works on the plunge pool, spillway, and coffer dam.
The plunge pool, a critical component of the dam's structure, is receiving attention to ensure its stability and functionality. The spillway, which plays a vital role in managing water flow during high-inflow periods, is also being refurbished to guarantee safe and efficient operation.
The coffer dam, a temporary dam constructed to facilitate the rehabilitation process, has enabled the ZRA to carry out repairs and upgrades to the dam's infrastructure. According to the ZRA, "This is the same procedure that was previously executed on Sluices 1 and 2." The authority emphasized that the test is a normal and necessary engineering procedure to ensure the newly refurbished gate is functioning exactly as designed.
During the test, approximately 1500 cubic meters of water will be released. The ZRA put this into perspective, stating, "This amount of water could power electricity generation for about 3 seconds a small and carefully managed release." The test will be closely monitored by experts to guarantee its success.
The ZRA reassured the public, saying, "Please note: This is a planned activity, and members of the public are kindly advised not to be alarmed. Everything is under control, and the test will be closely monitored by experts." The KDRP aims to extend the lifespan of the dam and ensure its continued safe operation.
