Memory lapse seals off thief’s fate

A 29-YEAR-OLD serial cellphone thief exposed himself after he allegedly approached one of his victims requesting for phone recharge services.

The suspect Trevor Nkomo from Mathendele in Plumtree appeared before magistrate, Joshua Nembaware, facing theft charges.

He was remanded in custody to September 16 for trial.

Nkomo is facing two counts of theft and robbery.

Prosecutor Sheila Nyathi alleged that on July 23, the complainant, Mlungisi Mabhena, realised that he had lost his cellphone while drinking beer at Msilisi Bar.

On July 26 at Siphosenkosi bar, Mabhena was approached by the suspect asking for a cellphone charger to boost his phone battery since it was now flat.

Mabhena realised that the phone was his and confronted Nkomo, but he snatched it and fled the scene.

On July 31, Nkomo threatened the second complainant, Hebert Moyo (30), with a machete before robbing him of his iTel A18 cellphone.

A police report was filed, leading to his arrest.
