Prevail International Group has partnered with the government to renovate part of the children’s unit at Sally Mugabe Central Hospital, with the project expected to be completed in the first quarter of the year.
Speaking during a tour of the old ophthalmology clinic currently under renovation, director of operations Precious Chipangura said the building is being upgraded under the Presidential Renovation Programme and will accommodate four departments.
“This building used to be our rehabilitation centre and, at some point, an ophthalmology clinic. With the renovations under the Presidential Renovation Programme, we are repurposing it to house four different departments,” Chipangura said.
The departments will include a Foetal Maternal Unit (FMU) for monitoring babies’ growth in utero, a kangaroo centre for nursing premature babies, a Family Support Clinic (victim-friendly unit) offering counselling and support services, and a fully equipped ophthalmology clinic with a theatre, recovery and admission bays.
“There will be a Foetal Maternal Unit where growth monitoring of babies in utero is done,” she said.
“We are also going to have a kangaroo centre where premature babies are nursed. Those born prematurely require warmth from their mothers, so they will be cared for here to promote healthy growth.
“There will also be a Family Support Clinic, which is a victim-friendly unit where individuals affected by traumatic events can access counselling, testing and other necessary support services.
“In addition, we will have an ophthalmology clinic where eye conditions for all age groups will be treated. It will include a theatre, as well as recovery and admission bays.”

Prevail International Group site engineer Tafadzwa Kavaza said the project is progressing well and is expected to be completed within the planned timeframe.
“We expect to be fully operational by the first quarter of the year. Renovations include replacing floors with porcelain tiles, repainting the walls, installing new ceilings and upgrading the electrical system,” Kavaza said.
“The windows will be replaced with aluminium frames, and the exterior of the building will also be repainted.”
