HARARE, Apr. 22 (NewsDay Live) – The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has warned against the illegal possession and transportation of explosives following last week’s fatal commuter omnibus explosion that killed several people.
In a statement, police said handling explosives without proper authority is a serious offence. “In terms of the Explosives Act [Chapter 10:08], it is a criminal offence for anyone to possess or transport explosives without being licensed or authorised,” the ZRP said.
The warning follows an explosion involving a Toyota Quantum along the Bulawayo–Gwanda Road near Esigodini, which killed multiple passengers. Preliminary indications suggest the blast may have been caused by dangerous or explosive material being carried in the vehicle, although investigations are ongoing.
Police stressed that no vehicle—public service, private, or family-owned—is permitted to carry explosives. “This is for the safety of travellers and the maintenance of law and order,” the ZRP said.
Authorities added that explosives are strictly regulated and may only be handled under conditions set by the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development.
The ZRP urged the public to report suspicious activities through the National Complaints Desk or at the nearest police station.
“Police will ensure the law takes its course without fear or favour on anyone found in illegal possession or transporting explosives without the relevant licence,” the statement said.
