Eight killed in bus, truck collision along Gokwe-Kwekwe road

Eight people were killed early Wednesday in a head-on collision involving a passenger bus and a haulage truck along the Gokwe-Kwekwe Road.

In a statement, the Zimbabwe Republic Police said the crash occurred around 5 a.m. at the 110km peg near Kwekwe.

Police said a Trip-Trans bus carrying 36 passengers allegedly attempted to overtake before colliding with the truck.

“The ZRP confirms the death of eight people in a fatal road traffic accident which occurred today at 0500 hours at the 110km peg along Gokwe-Kwekwe Road towards Kwekwe. A Trip-Trans bus with 36 passengers tried to overtake and collided with a haulage truck,” police said.

The accident has renewed concerns over reckless overtaking and speeding on Zimbabwe’s highways, particularly involving public transport vehicles.
