HARARE, Jun. 22 (NewsDay Live) — A 25-year-old Chipinge man has been sentenced to an effective two years in prison after being convicted of possessing and dealing in cannabis.
Blessed Mhlanga was convicted by the Chipinge Magistrates’ Court after he was found in possession of 80 grammes of dagga, in contravention of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act.
The court initially sentenced him to three years in prison but suspended one year for five years on condition of good behaviour, leaving him to serve an effective two-year jail term.
Prosecutors said that on April 17, 2026, at about 5:30am, police officers conducting a stop-and-search operation along the Ngundu-Tanganda Highway intercepted Mhlanga and searched him.
The search led to the recovery of 80 grammes of dagga. Subsequent investigations established that the cannabis was intended for commercial distribution.
The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) said the conviction sends a strong message to drug traffickers and dealers.
“Drugs continue to be a menace in our society, threatening to tear communities apart. The NPAZ would like to warn drug peddlers that they face severe jail time for dealing in illicit substances,” the authority said.
Zimbabwean authorities have intensified anti-drug operations across the country as part of a broader campaign to curb drug and substance abuse, which has emerged as a major social concern, particularly among young people.
