PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa has signed the controversial Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3 into law, completing the legislative process for one of Zimbabwe’s most far-reaching constitutional reforms.
The new law introduces sweeping changes to Zimbabwe's constitutional framework, including extending the terms of office for the President, Parliament and local authorities from five to seven years, changing the method of electing future Presidents.
The legislation has been fiercely contested by opposition parties, constitutional lawyers and civil society organisations, who argued that it undermines the 2013 Constitution and sought to stop its enactment through the courts.
The government, however, has maintained that the amendments are necessary to strengthen governance and improve institutional efficiency.
