National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi

A GWERU police officer is in soup after he engaged in a high speed car chase that led to a fatal accident on Monday night.

Constable Sakala of Mkoba 1 Police Station allegedly pursued a Toyota Aqua with two people on board, leading to an accident that saw the death of the duo.

National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi on Tuesday said disciplinary action would be taken against Sakala.

“The ZRP confirms that investigations are being conducted in connection with a fatal road traffic accident which occurred along Bristol Road on April 28 at around 10:30pm, where two Toyota Aqua occupants died on the spot when the vehicle hit a tree in a speed chase with Constable Sakala of ZRP Mkoba,” Nyathi said.

“The police have taken note of the videos circulating on social media platforms in relation to the accident.

“The ZRP reiterates that both criminal and disciplinary action will be taken against Constable Sakala for his conduct.”

Nyathi extended condolences to the family of the deceased, adding that more details would be released in due course.

Meanwhile, Gweru residents took to social media platforms to register their displeasure at the conduct of law enforcement agents who chase vehicles endangering the lives of innocent people.
