Bulawayo ward 25 councillor Mpumelelo Moyo has castigated the local authority for taking too long toconstruct public toiletsat a busy business centre in Emganwini despite the fact that money had been allocated for the project.
Moyo expressed his disappointment during a full council meeting last week indicating that the ward was allocated US$22 000 ward retention funds which are enough to construct the toilets at Tashas Business Centre. He accused the department of works of taking too long to embark on the project.
The ward retention fund is made up of 3% of total rates paid by residents in a ward to the local authority every month with the funds being ploughed back to the communities to establish and sustain development projects. Moyo told Southern Eye on Sunday that residents had agreed to use the retention funds to construct toilets.
“Since last year, I have been trying to pursue the issue with the department of works, who assured me that the total cost of the toilet was going to be US$17 000 and we had US$22 000, which is enough for the project but wehave been referred from one office to another by the works department,” he said.
