Man convicted of stealing uncle's beer

Plumtree magistrate Joshua Nembaware convicted Iphithule Mpofu of stealing his uncle’s alcohol.

AN 18-year-old man from Mphoengs area in Plumtree under Chief Tshitshi has been sentenced to 210 hours of community service after being found guilty of a theft charge.

Plumtree magistrate Joshua Nembaware convicted Iphithule Mpofu of stealing his uncle’s alcohol.

Iphithule pleaded guilty to stealing his uncle Mabatho Mpofu’s alcohol and Nembaware sentenced him to 210 hours of community service to be completed within six weeks.

A further six months were suspended on condition that Iphithule restitutes the complainant the sum of R600 by September 30.

Prosecutor Selstine Madziwa had told the court that Mabatho (47),  who is Iphithule’s uncle from the same area, went to South Africa, leaving everything in order, including the kitchen unit, which was locked.

On July 8 this year, Mathabo discovered the offence after unlocking the kitchen unit intending to take the two 750ml bottles of Viceroy brandy.

He reportedly discovered that the brandy had been stolen.

The court heard that Mabatho asked his nephew about the stolen alcohol but did not get a satisfactory response and he reported the matter to the police, leading to Iphithule’s arrest.
