A GROUP of young people and economic self-sufficiency. ple in Gweru has received financial support to launch a detergent manufacturing project, marking another step in local efforts to foster youth empowerment

The donation was handed over by Gweru Urban Member of Parliament Alex Mkwembi during a community engagement event in Mtapa high-density suburb at the weekend.

The initiative, spearheaded by Christian Youths Towards Development (CYTD), focuses on equipping young people with practical skills and availing employment opportunities.

“We must provide tangible opportunities for our youth — where skills translate to production, self-reliance and sustainable businesses,” Mkwembi said in his address.

“As leaders, we cannot afford to watch while young people remain idle. That’s why we’re supporting practical projects like these, which build both livelihoods and local capacity.”

He praised CYDT for its proactive approach, particularly the free skills-training programme for fellow youths.

“Their work reflects vision, leadership and a genuine commitment to uplifting others,” he added.

The funding will be used to procure raw materials and essential equipment, with production set to begin in the coming weeks.

The long-term goal is to expand operations and supply detergents to surrounding communities.

Mtapa district chairperson Robin Tsanyawo urged beneficiaries to utilise the opportunity responsibly.

“This support must translate to real impact. We expect accountability and results — proof that young people can drive meaningful change,” he said.

CYTD leader Chaplin Chirume expressed gratitude for the support, adding that transparency will be paramount in managing funds.

“Many skilled youths lack start-up capital,” he said.

“This intervention is a game-changer.

“Our vision goes beyond detergent production — we are building a sustainable youth-led enterprise that creates jobs.”
