Residents from Bulawayo’s Emakhandeni suburb have called for the establishment of a police base in their area to combat rising crime.
The appeal was made during the Emakhandeni-Luveve Constituency’s inaugural crime indaba held at Luveve Youth Centre last Friday.
Ward 11 councillor, Susan Sithole, highlighted the challenges faced by residents, particularly those from Emakhandeni A, who travel long distances to report crimes at Entumbane Police Station.
“The lack of a nearby station makes residents vulnerable,” Sithole said.
Sithole also noted an increase in theft, particularly of water taps, urging authorities to set up a police base to improve security.
"We are appealing for the construction of the police base so that we are able to curb crime within our area,” she said.
Luveve Police Station officer-in-charge, inspector Almos Musona, commended the local neighbourhood watch committee for collaborating with law enforcement.
"We urge the local leader to work with the business community to help to fund the neighbourhood watch committee to acquire resources to enhance crime prevention efforts," he said.
