POLICE have issued a strong appeal to parents, guardians, school authorities and transport operators to prioritise the safety and security of learners.
The call was made by national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi, who emphasised also the importance of safe transport and responsible handling of school finances.
“Transport operators (must) ensure that their vehicles are certified fit before attempting to transport children to schools,” he said.
Nyathi further warned drivers to exercise caution on the roads.
“Avoid speeding and, above all, comply with all road rules and regulations to prevent accidents,” he said.
He advised against night travel when transporting learners, highlighting the dangers that come with it.
“Learners who travel after dark are at risk of road traffic accidents and other potential dangers,” Nyathi said.
Transporters were also reminded not to overload buses and vehicles carrying pupils.

“School authorities (must) bank all tuition and fees to reduce the risk of robberies and that keeping large sums of money on school premises attracts criminals and puts both staff and learners in danger,” Nyathi said, further urging parents to promptly report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
“We urge parents to be vigilant and report suspicious criminal activities to the Police immediately,” he said.
Nyathi said the safety of children should remain a collective responsibility, especially as the busy final school term unfolds.
