BILLBOES Mine, under the Caledonia Mining Corporation, has donated 100 desks and 100 chairs to Majiji Primary School in Bubi, Matabeleland North province, under its plough back to the community social responsibility programme.
The school was recently the centre of concern after a photograph of children learning while sitting on buckets went viral on social media.
This was a sign that the school had a serious shortage of furniture, a development that prompted the intervention of the mining firm.
The donation was revealed by the Bubi constituency information office on Saturday, which described it as a timely boost for the school.
"Majiji Primary School in Bubi Constituency has received a much-needed boost after Bilboes Mine (Caledonia) donated 100 desks and 100 chairs following a request by the area’s Member of Parliament, Simelisizwe Sibanda, in time for Grade 7 examinations that start on Monday (yesterday),” a statement released by the Bubi constituency information office read.
“The school had been grappling with a severe shortage of furniture, forcing many learners to share desks or sit on the floor.”
Bilboes Mine underscored its dedication to corporate social responsibility.
“As Bilboes Mine, we believe in growing together with the communities where we operate, an official from the mine, only identified as Magugu, said.

“Supporting education is one of the best ways to invest in the future, and we are proud to partner Hon Sibanda and the people of Bubi in improving learning conditions for our children.”
Expressing gratitude to the mining company, Sibanda reaffirmed his commitment to education support.
“I want to sincerely thank Bilboes Mine for answering the call to support our schools. This is a clear demonstration of what partnership can achieve,” he said.
“As your MP, I will continue to reach every corner of Bubi Constituency to ensure our schools are well equipped and our children have the opportunities they deserve.”
Sibanda was accompanied by senior Zanu PF leaders in the province.
The constituency office noted that the donation reflects President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s leadership in creating a friendly environment for investment, which encourages companies like Bilboes Mine to contribute meaningfully through corporate social responsibility.
“The gesture aligns with the goals of the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1) and Vision 2030, which emphasise human capital development and inclusive growth,” the constituency office said.
Parents, teachers and pupils at Majiji Primary School reportedly expressed heartfelt gratitude to both Bilboes Mine and Sibanda, describing the donation as life-changing for the future of education in the constituency.
