The City of Bulawayo has proposed to install solar powered streetlights in most parts of the city in 2026 as part of council’s smart city initiatives, further reducing the electricity bill.
This is contained in the city’s proposed 2026 budget presentation that Council shared with stakeholders during the consultation meetings.
The installation of solar powered streetlights is part of the Public Lighting priorities as requested by stakeholders in the review of the 2025 budget.
According to the proposed 2026 budget presentation, the council intends to introduce new solar-powered streetlights on key routes like Nketa Drive and Siyephambili road to improve reliability and reduce long-term operational costs.
The proposed installation of solar-powered streetlights is expected to reduce the City’s reliance on the national grid, which is also affected by power shortages
Council is also in the process of introducing a Smart Traffic Management System, which will result in the installation of cameras, traffic loops and right-turning arrows at intersections and at locations that are prone to traffic congestion, violations and accidents.
