BULAWAYO’s ward 26 councillor, Mpumelelo Moyo, who is facing allegations of corruption, has been granted bail by High Court judge Justice Evangelista Kabasa.
Moyo filed an application for bail pending appeal against conviction and sentence at the Bulawayo High Court through his lawyer Prince Butshe.
The complainant in the case is the State, represented by Tsitsi Mapfumo, who has been employed by Labenmon Investments (Private) Limited as a co-ordinator since last November.
Allegations are that on November 3, 2023, the complainant made an application for 10 hectares of land from Bulawayo City Council (BCC) to set up a cement mixing plant.
Almost a year later on October 10, 2024, BCC offered Labenmon Investments 5,6 hectares of land for the construction of a cement mixing plant in the Umvumila industrial area.
Moyo went to the complainant’s place of residence demanding a bribe for allegedly facilitating the land offer.
On November 11, Moyo alongside his co-accused deputy mayor Edwin Ndlovu went to the complainant’s place of residence and demanded US$20 000 as bribe.
The complainant reported the matter to the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission, leading to their arrest.
