Mothers’ shelter nears completion in Mwenezi West

Mwenezi district information officer, Rodney Kudzanai, underscored the importance of the project in strengthening rural healthcare delivery.

SIGNIFICANT progress has been made in ward 10 of Mwenezi West constituency, where the construction of a waiting mothers' shelter at Nikita Clinic is now 95% complete.

The project, implemented under the 3rd 100-day cycle, is a collaborative initiative among the Mwenezi Rural District Council, the Zimbabwe National Army, and Bubye Valley Conservancy.

The facility will provide expectant mothers from remote villages a safe and comfortable place to stay in the final weeks of pregnancy helping to reduce complications caused by long-distance travel during labour.

Mwenezi district information officer, Rodney Kudzanai, underscored the importance of the project in strengthening rural healthcare delivery.

“This project is a game-changer for maternal health in our district. Many women in rural areas face challenges in accessing care when labour begins. With this shelter, expectant mothers will be closer to skilled health workers when they need them most,” Kudzanai said.

Residents expressed gratitude for the development.

Chiedza Sibanda, a pregnant mother from a nearby village, said the shelter would ease the anxiety many women endured during pregnancy.

“I used to worry about going into labour at night or during the rainy season, when roads are impassable. This shelter means I can come early and wait close to the clinic. It gives me peace of mind,” Sibanda said.

“We are really thankful to everyone who made this possible. It shows that our lives matter, even in the rural areas,” she added.

The shelter is expected to be fully operational in the coming weeks, with local leaders saying it sets a good example of successful public-private partnerships which improve lives in under-served communities.
