A Bulawayo man has been convicted and jailed for unlawful possess of copper cables belonging to the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company

A 48-YEAR-OLD Bulawayo man has been convicted and jailed for unlawful possess of copper cables belonging to the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC).

Leo Madziwa (48) of Nkulumane 5 appeared before Bulawayo regional magistrate Taurai Manuwere facing a charge of possessing copper without a permit, as defined in the Copper Control Act.

Madziwa pleaded not guilty to the charge.

He was remanded to tomorrow for sentencing.

The court was told that on September 18, detectives from CID Minerals, Flora and Fauna Unit in Bulawayo received information that Madziwa was dealing in copper cables and was at Pumula Beer Garden in Sizinda.

The detectives swiftly reacted and found Madziwa seated in his silver VW Polo.

They identified themselves and conducted a search of his vehicle.

Inside the boot, the police discovered a sack containing copper cables.

When asked to produce a licence or permit authorising possession of the copper, Madziwa failed to do so and was arrested.

The recovered copper cables were taken to CID Minerals, Flora and Fauna Unit Bulawayo for further management and later identified by ZETDC engineers as the power utility.

The copper cables weighed 13 kilogrammes and were valued at US$260.

All the property was recovered.
