TWO children have died and 14 other persons were hospitalised in critical condition after consuming suspected contaminated food and drink at a traditional beer ceremony in the Mashava area of Masvingo on October 27.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the tragic incident, stating that investigations are underway.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police is investigating a sad incident where two children died while 14 others, who include seven adults and four children, are critically ill after attending a traditional beer ceremony,” Nyathi said.
According to the police, the families ate sadza (a staple maize meal) and drank mahewu (a fermented drink) during the traditional ritual.
Shortly afterwards, both children and adults fell seriously ill with severe stomach pains.
The two deceased children were aged three and seven.
“Four children and seven adults are currently in critical condition at Masvingo General Hospital, while three others are receiving treatment at Mashava Clinic.”
Nyathi assured the public that further details will be released as investigations progress.
