Laughter, leaks and local legends: November in Bulawayo

Being an adaptable person, I’ve moved with the times and embraced the spirit.

Hello again, my friends! A refreshing new week in a new month is upon us.

At this time, our American friends are usually in full holiday swing, having kicked things off with Halloween last month and now looking ahead to Thanksgiving in November.

Being an adaptable person, I’ve moved with the times and embraced the spirit.

So this month, I am going to be thankful for life, good health, shelter, and of course, for your support, my beloved readers.

Kikikiki, where would I be without you, my buddies? Kudos to you.

BULAWAYO, BLUE-WEYO

A friend of mine, who loves these events even more than I do, recently tagged me along to the ground-breaking ceremony for a new brewery at Delta Beverages in Belmont, Bulawayo.

Everything went well and on time, except I heard some journalists were turned away at the gate.

This was either because they hadn’t been invited or, if they were, they didn’t make prior reservations—kikikiki. The things we take for granted!

Anyhow, as the event proceeded, things got a bit awkward.

One of the directors—I can’t recall her exact title—repeatedly referred to our city as “Blue-weyo.”

Heheheh! It sounded fancy, but it was far from it.

People kept making side comments each time she said ‘Blueweyo’.

Apparently, one guest could no longer stomach it and later went to correct her.

Hey, dear visitors, we are from Bulawayo. It’s not just a meaningless word; please make an effort to find out its origin. Yoh!

VULGAR QUEEN

Kanti, who is this extremely vulgar girl who is always spewing unprintable things on those audios?

She reminds me of Racheal during her days as a presenter at Khulumani FM and the bombshells she used to drop.

My friend tells me this one goes by the name of Kalanga Queen.

I almost didn’t believe it because I’ve met the Kalanga Queen twice at the Bulawayo Theatre, and I would never have thought her capable of self-recording such explicit sexual content, kikikiki.

She is so graceful and laid back!

But wait, I also heard that when Raisdon Baya posted about two content creators who linked up to discuss content and ended up doing things that only married elders are allowed to do… he was apparently referring to her and a fellow award-winning Facebook comic blogger. Eish! Things are happening in the City of Kings, hey?

And finally, the nominees are…

The Bulawayo Arts Awards have finally announced this year’s nominees, and boy, am I excited!

There are a lot of new names on the list, which is refreshing (I’ll get to that in a bit), and of course, some familiar ones.

Some of my favourite nominees this year include Solo Ranger Bhekiwe Dube and her boo, BoyNino; Poet Sonkomose; Mbulelo Mpofu; Bhila; Calvin Mangena; SaDeLenswork; NoNameDanceCrew; Lindelani Calisto Mafu; Frank Chirisa; Umnikazi Wempuphu; Lisa Masuku; Langalakhe Mabhena; the beautiful Becky K; and radio’s Miss Tee.

NAAAAA, NOT FA ME!

Of course, with every awards show comes the rau rau, and we’ve gotten our fair share from the BAAs.

Comedian and actor Madlela Sikhobokhobo immediately rejected his nomination, arguing they should have given it to someone else, as he has collected up to eight BAAs over the years.

I have to partly agree with him.

It is necessary to rotate these things; as much as it’s presumed to be merit-based, you can’t repeatedly award the same group of people.

Another part of me, however, thinks that if the award is truly based on merit, then the same person can win over and over if they are the best… a real catch-22, hahaha.

While on that note, if he was caught by surprise with his nomination, does that not mean he hadn’t entered to begin with?

I’ve heard that when people cry out for being snubbed, they are often told they did not enter.

Does the rule of entering not apply universally? Damned if I do, damned if I don’t!

We wait to see which star will shine bright on the big night. Hearty congratulations to all the nominees; may the best one win.

Cheers, my friends. Until next time, remember to be good.

If you can’t be good, be safe. And do pop by my Instagram account.
