A RAGING fire tore through Bulawayo Polytechnic last Thursday evening, destroying sections of the institution’s Applied Science block.
Bulawayo chief fire officer Mhlangano Moyo said the fire was believed to had been triggered by overheated flammable substances such as paraffin and cobra wax used in laboratory experiments.
Moyo said property worth ZiG3 million was destroyed by the fire and they managed to save property worth ZiG27 million.
“Despite the ferocity of the flames, firefighters managed to contain the inferno before it could spread to adjacent buildings,” Moyo said.
“The co-ordination among the Bulawayo fire department team was remarkable as they managed to prevent what could have been a total disaster.”
There were no injuries or fatalities.
