Bulawayo on high alert for floods

Bulawayo has sounded the alarm over the heightened risk of floods and other weather-related disasters, mobilising a coordinated city-wide response.

AUTHORITIES in Bulawayo have sounded the alarm over the heightened risk of floods and other weather-related disasters, mobilising a coordinated city-wide response.

The Community Disaster Risk Management Programme convened a multi-stakeholder meeting on Monday to map out strategies aimed at avoiding loss of life and property.

The meeting brought together a mix of disaster-response players, including the Bulawayo Fire Department, Zimbabwe Republic Police, Environmental Management Agency, ambulance services, councillors and the Department of Civil Protection for the Bulawayo Metropolitan province.

According to Bulawayo chief fire officer Mhlangano Moyo, the gathering was crucial for ensuring a unified front.

“We are preparing for floods and maroon-related cases,” he said.

“The goal is to bring our councillors on board so that we speak the same language when it comes to disaster risk reduction.”

The meeting aimed to outline the province’s preparedness plan, with a strong emphasis on rapid response and community awareness.

Expert weather insights were provided by the Meteorological Services Department to guide emergency planning throughout the season.

As storms loom, Moyo said Bulawayo disaster management teams were determined to ensure they are a step ahead to prevent loss of life and property.
