Bulawayo to host international Para volleyball tournament

Bulawayo is set to host an international Para Volleyball tournament in April next year, a significant milestone for the sport in the country.

The announcement was made by Zimbabwe Para Volleyball president, Oripa Mubika, during a recent induction training session at Townsend High School in Bulawayo, the designated host city.

Mubika revealed that the sub-zonal club tournament will see teams from across the region converge in Zimbabwe.

Confirmed participating countries include Zambia, South Africa, and Mozambique, with additional interest shown from Kenya.

“We have been waiting for an international game for a long time,” Mubika said.

“We are now actively preparing for the sub-zonal club tournament.”

The event is being sponsored by the Hands Open Development Trust.

Its representative, Mikel Nharo, said efforts are underway to raise the necessary resources for the programme.

“We want to give an insight to the people on what will be happening, because most people do not know about the game,” Nharo said, emphasising the goal of raising public awareness about Para Volleyball.

Bulawayo Provincial Sports and Recreation Commission co-ordinator, Sam Simba Dzwimbu, welcomed the event, expressing confidence in the local organising committee.

“We are happy that Zimbabwe Para Volleyball has put in place measures to make sure they are ready.

“They do not have much time, so we are encouraging them to work harder to ensure a successful hosting,” Dzwimbu said.

He noted that the induction session was aimed at equipping committee members with the skills needed to form a strong main organising committee.

“We are confident that the team put in place here is a team of men and women who are going to do a great job,” he added.

Dzwimbu also took the opportunity to highlight the need for growth in the sport locally.

“There are a few sitting volleyball clubs, and we encourage more teams to come on board,” he said.

“We hope this tournament will inspire more teams, especially those with an interest to participate.”

The April 2025 tournament marks a pivotal moment for Para Volleyball in Zimbabwe, promising to elevate the sport’s profile and foster greater regional integration and competition.
