Kombi driver stabbed over R5 dispute

Jafet Nyathi appeared before Bulawayo regional magistrate Mark Dzira facinga charge of attempted murder

A VIOLENT altercation over R5 nearly turned fatal when a Bulawayo man allegedly stabbed another and struck him with a padlock in a suspected attempted murder case.

Jafet Nyathi appeared before Bulawayo regional magistrate Mark Dzira facinga charge of attempted murder after he allegedly stabbed Learnmore Magwana (27) twice with an okapi knife and hit him with a padlock during a dispute.

He was remanded in custody for trial.

Nyathi admitted to assaulting Magwana, but pleaded not guilty to attempted murder, claiming self-defence.

He told the court that Magwana, a commuter omnibus driver, was the initial aggressor who stabbed him first on the thigh.

He said he only retaliated.

“He stabbed me first. I managed to wrest the knife from him and struck him on the hand with a padlock before stabbing him,”Nyathi said.

It is alleged that on November 6 2025 at Redan garage in Makhokhoba, Nyathi was hitting Alexander Sibanda, a conductor to Magwana’s kombi, with a padlock tied to a rope.

This prompted Magwana to get off the steering wheel and to check onSibanda, when he came across an aggressive Nyathi, who stabbed him twice in the chest.

Nyathi also hit him with the same padlock.

In a bid to avoid violence, Magwana went back to his vehicle, where he was informed by his passengers that he was bleeding.

He reported the matter to Bulawayo Central Police Station and was quickly taken to hospital and treated for injuries.
