Kwekwe woman defies odds

Susan Gurajena

In the heart of Kwekwe, a remarkable woman is rewriting the narrative of rural empowerment, proving that faith, vision and determination can break deep-rooted barriers.

Susan Gurajena, a farmer, educator, pastor's wife, entrepreneur and a mother, is leading a movement grounded in purpose powered by passion.

With a burning passion for farming, her journey began not in a boardroom, but on the land with a deep love for farming and a determination to uplift others.

Gurajena has turned her dreams into realities by launching successful ventures in mushroom production, beekeeping and other agro-based businesses.

She is the founder of Getsfarm and the face behind “Sue’s Products,” a growing brand that includes her flagship item, Sue’s Honey.

Armed with a Master of Commerce in Strategic Management and Corporate Governance degree, Gurajena also serves as the head of division for Adult and Continuing Education and Small to Medium Enterprises, where she integrates practical skills into youth empowerment programmes.

“I never pursued a degree just to get a job, but to be self-employed. I wanted to create opportunities not only for myself, but for others as well,” she said.

Driven by her vision of rural industrialisation and inclusive development, Gurajena has initiated various training programmes equipping disadvantaged communities with hands-on skills in

masonry, plumbing, carpentry, perfume and detergent making, and more.

“Through this initiative, community members have acquired construction skills, including masonry, carpentry and plumbing, that have equipped them with skills that make them employable and self-reliant,” she said.

A recent training with the World Intellectual Property Organisation gave her valuable insights into branding and intellectual property.

“I initially thought I would just label my honey as natural honey, but now I have a registered trademark and a clear vision for expanding Sue’s Products,” she said.

With Sue's products poised for expansion and growing impact, Gurajena is not just producing honey but a buzz of hope, empowerment and purpose.

“I intend to grow my markets and produce many products under Sue's products,” she said.

As a pastor's wife and woman of virtue, she empowers other women and youths with various skills for self-employment and creating employment for others.

Gurajena balances her roles with a deep commitment to uplifting youth and women, encouraging them to become entrepreneurs and be their own bosses.

She encouraged women and youth to pursue entrepreneurship with faith and purpose, citing Proverbs 31, “she sets about her work vigorously, her arms are strong for her tasks,” as a reminder that with dedication and resilience, success is within reach.

Her story is one of resilience, innovation and purpose, a powerful example of how a woman’s determination can transform an entire community.
