A 23-year-old woman from Sizinda, Bulawayo, has been sentenced to three years in prison for stabbing her neighbour with a pair of scissors in a dispute over a US$20 debt.
Thandeka Ndlovu was convicted of attempted murder by Bulawayo regional magistrate Archie Wochiunga.
The magistrate suspended 10 months of the sentence for five years on condition that Ndlovu does not commit a similar offence, leaving her to serve an effective 26 months behind bars.
The incident occurred on November 16 last year at Connaught Heights Flats, at the corner of Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo Street and Connaught Avenue.
The court heard that the complainant, Agatha Chibuda, confronted Ndlovu demanding repayment of the money she owed her. What began as a verbal dispute escalated to violence.
Ndlovu struck Chibuda with a broomstick before going into her room, where she armed herself with a pair of scissors. On return she stabbed Chibuda twice — once on the right side of the neck and once in the chest. She also bit her on the right hand.
Chibuda sustained serious injuries and was rushed to hospital for treatment.
The matter was reported to the police, leading to Ndlovu’s arrest.
