Bulawayo duo redefines Afro-hip-hop

Nathan Zondo, aka Twenty20

In Bulawayo, where raw energy and bold storytelling meet music that strikes at the heart of Zimbabwean life, Amakruger are slowly carving their way into the country’s music scene.

Formed in 2018, the duo — Dalumuzi Tshongwe, popularly known as Dusty and Nathan Zondo, aka Twenty20 —has been quietly shaking up the city’s Afro-hip-hop scene and turning heads nationwide.

Their journey began with humble beginnings singing in school halls and church.

Nathan’s father, a pastor, provided the first stage for a talent destined for bigger arenas.

“Music was a calling,” the duo explains.

Inspired by Zimbabwe’s rich culture and fearless artists who “speak truth to power,” Amakruger have crafted a sound that is both conscious and contagious—blending lyrical depth with irresistible beats.

Their breakout moment came with the song Mhinduro, a track that showcased their storytelling and signalled their arrival on Zimbabwe’s music scene.

“Mhinduro was a game-changer, showing us the impact of authentic storytelling,” says Amakruger.

Influenced by local legends like Asaph Afrika and Mzistozz Mfanafuthi, while drawing inspiration from global icons, the duo don’t just make music—they create movements.

Despite limited resources, they have thrived by innovating and staying authentic.

“Limited resources forced us to innovate and stay true to our vision,” said Nathan.

Their upcoming album, Every Black Man Is a King, promises to elevate their sound further, featuring powerful collaborations. Beyond music, Amakruger are committed to giving back, with plans for music workshops and community outreach this year.

As Zimbabwe’s music landscape evolves, one thing is clear: Amakruger are not just participating—they are leading the charge.
