Gokwe’s Nembudziya eyes town status

Machingura said the local authority has already secured the green light from the government to initiate the transition of Nembudziya from a growth point to a town.

GOKWE North Rural District Council (RDC) has set ambitious plans to transform Nembudziya growth point to attain full town status.

This was revealed by the RDC’s information communication technology manager, Tapiwa Machingura, at the 4th Zimbabwe Annual Diaspora Conference held last week in Gweru.

Machingura said the local authority has already secured the green light from the government to initiate the transition of Nembudziya from a growth point to a town.

“We are finalising outstanding requirements needed to attain town status,” Machingura said.

“This includes upgrading roads, improving infrastructure and initiating the formal transition from a rural district council to a town council.

“Eight to 10 months ago there was very little surfaced road infrastructure but this has changed significantly. We have for example, the ongoing surfacing of Jahana-Nembudziya road, a project expected to reduce transport costs and improve accessibility.”

He said the Local Government ministry has already approved the district’s master plan, with vast tracts of land identified for residential and institutional expansion.

Machingura said the RDC has serviced new stands under a modern layout to spearhead urban growth, allocated land for higher education with capacity of up to six universities.

He said they had secured partnership with a local university to spur infrastructure and signed a diaspora agreement for the development of a gated residential community in Nembudziya among other developments.

He called for private sector partnerships with the RDC to complement the government’s efforts in developing the area.

“There is significant potential for growth in production, retail and service sectors,” he said.
