Nkayi girl with 12 O’Level distinctions pleads for A’Level help

A Hlangabeza High School pupil from Nkayi who scored distinctions in all 12 O’Level subjects is pleading for support to continue her studies.

Petronella Mlilo, a day scholar who walked 20 minutes to school and juggled part-time jobs to buy data and stationery, credited divine grace for her results.

“By God’s grace, I nailed all my 12 subjects with flyin’ colours,” she said.

She described battling heavy workloads, peer pressure, and a lack of resources, including rulers and calculators.

To cope, she revised with boarders in the evenings.

“I would go to the school in the evening and revise with boarders as they had better learning equipment like textbooks, free Wi-Fi,” she said.

Mlilo, who loves sciences, now wants to study medicine.

“It would be such a great honour and favour to be given such a chance,” she appealed. “Kindly help me to finish my studies.”

Her story caught the attention of the Council for Churches in Africa (CCA) during a church tour in Nkayi.

CCA President Rocky Moyo said the council is mobilising backing, including presidential scholarships.

“The country has to understand that there are few people who can do better than her,” Moyo said.

“We have written to ministers… we need to fully support her.”

For girls facing similar odds, Mlilo said: “Study hard and create your own personal time and timetable. Don’t forget to pray. Work hard – we are together in this.”
