Bulawayo ward 26 councillor Mpumelelo Moyo has commended the Seventh-day Adventist Church Emganwini District for its role in promoting Christian values and helping to curb drug and substance abuse in the community.
This follows a two-week evangelism programme that saw nearly 40 people being baptised.
The initiative, he said, was contributing to efforts to address rising social challenges such as drug abuse, crime and other forms of moral decay, particularly among young people in Emganwini.
Moyo said promotion of Christian values played a vital role in ensuring community cohesion and encouraging empathy among residents.
“Christian values are important in one's life. It means people will offer empathy to one another in times of need within the community to curb immorality such as criminal activities, prostitution and drug and substance abuse,” he said.
Moyo expressed satisfaction at the number of youths who participated in the programme and chose to embrace Christianity, saying it is encouraging to see young people turning away from substance abuse and adopting positive lifestyles.
“It is so pleasing to see youths in the area turning to Christ and choosing to live holy lives in a world filled with diseases and wars,” he said.
“I commend the SDA Church for a job well done and encourage it to continue its efforts in Emganwini.”

Moyo called for continued support of church-led community initiatives, saying such programmes play an important role in addressing social challenges at the grassroots level.
Emganwini District pastor Obadiah Ngwenya said the evangelism programme recorded significant success, with 34 people having been baptised so far, describing the community response as “encouraging and inspiring”.
He said the programme was aimed at fostering spiritual growth, unity, hope and positive transformation in society.
“The community's response has been truly encouraging and inspiring, as many people continue to attend the meetings with great interest and a sincere desire to hear and learn the Word of God,” he said.
Ngwenya encouraged residents and church members to continue participating, saying their involvement is helping to transform lives and enlighten the community.
He added that the church would continue its outreach programmes, calling on the community to work together in building a stronger, faith-driven society.
