Southern Region teams clash in Zifa Munhumutapa Challenge Cup

The Zifa Munhumutapa Challenge Cup Southern Region qualifiers kick into action this weekend, with Round 2 headlined by a fierce Filabusi rivalry.

Jordan host Talen Vision on Saturday at Mthwakazi Stadium in a must-win clash, with only the victor progressing to the third round.

Jordan coach Johanisi Nhuma said he expects a tight contest.

“It’s a coveted tournament, the richest in the land, and it was launched by President Mnangagwa, so we all want to lay our hands on it. It will certainly not be an easy game,” he said.

Nhuma admitted Talen Vision boast more experienced players but vowed his side would put up a spirited fight.

The highly anticipated match-up leads a stacked Southern Region fixture list.

Launched earlier this year by President Emmerson Mnangagwa, the Munhumutapa Challenge Cup is the most lucrative knockout tournament on the African continent, backed by a US$25 million investment over five years.

With an annual disbursement of US$5 million, the men’s champions will receive a staggering US$1 million grand prize, while the women’s winners walk away with US$200 000.

Featuring over 1 000 teams across Zimbabwe, the inclusive tournament bridges grassroots football, Division One leagues, and the Premier Soccer League.

All matches are one-legged, high-stakes knockout fixtures, with losers instantly eliminated.

In the opening rounds, Division One teams have been drawn regionally across the Northern, Southern, Eastern, and Central divisions, giving lower-tier sides an equal shot at glory.

Elsewhere in the Southern Region, Imbizo face Bulawayo City, Bulawayo Warriors line up against Nkayi United, Bosso 90 take on Megawatt, and Black Rock battle Casmyn.

Zebra Revolution meet Khami United, while Aqua Stars host Vic Falls City Herentals.

With a million-dollar prize and a place in the CAF Confederations Cup at stake, there is all to play for.
