Mwenezi East schools receive US$10 000 development boost

Sheillah Chikomo

Schools in Mwenezi East Constituency have received a boost after legislator Sheillah Chikomo donated over US$10 000 towards borehole drilling, classroom construction and youth development programmes in the area.

The donation was made last Wednesday at Chagomoka Primary School, where community members, school authorities and local leaders gathered for the handover ceremony.

Chagomoka Primary School received US$1 500 towards drilling of a borehole to address long-standing water challenges affecting learners and staff.

Chisume Primary School also benefited from US$1 500 for borehole drilling, as well as 25 bags of cement to support the completion of a classroom block under construction.

Matenga Primary School was allocated US$1 000 towards classroom construction, while Vezvi Primary and Lirhanzo Primary each received US$1 000 for ongoing infrastructure development projects.

Speaking at the event, Chikomo said the interventions were aimed at improving the quality of education and ensuring rural schools have access to basic facilities.

“We want to ensure that our children learn in a conducive environment where there is clean water, adequate classrooms and proper infrastructure,” she said.

She added that development efforts in the constituency must prioritise education and community welfare.

“These schools are the foundation of our communities. When we invest in them, we are investing in the future of Mwenezi East,” she said.

Chikomo said the inclusion of sport was deliberate as part of youth empowerment and community cohesion.

“We believe in supporting both education and sport because both are important in shaping responsible and disciplined young people,” she said.

Magoche welcomed the donation, describing it as a significant boost to ongoing development efforts in Ward 15.

“This is a very important intervention for our schools. The issue of water shortages and incomplete classroom blocks has been a challenge for a long time,” he said.

He added that the support would have a lasting impact on the learning environment.

“We are grateful for this gesture. It will go a long way in improving the conditions of our learners and teachers,” he said.

The event also featured a youth sporting tournament aimed at promoting community engagement and talent development.

Winning soccer and netball teams received US$500 each and jerseys, while runners-up were awarded US$300.

Sporting equipment was also distributed to participating teams.

Local leadership said the programme would help address infrastructure gaps while strengthening community development initiatives across Mwenezi East.
