A 40-year-old visually impaired Zimbabwean jazz keyboardist based in Botswana has joined the fight against gender-based violence (GBV) through his latest musical offering.
Titled “GBV”, the track by Joru Musimurimwa sends a strong message against violence and abuse, particularly by men against women and children.
Affectionately known as JKeys, Musimurimwa said the song was intended to challenge men to reject violence.
“The song urges men to stop beating, killing and abusing women and children,” he said.
Born in Sanyati, JKeys is the frontman of the Royal Jazz Band ensemble. A former pupil of Jairos Jiri Primary School in Kadoma and Waddilove High School, he developed a passion for music during his primary school years.
His other song, Segarona (Culture), is also gaining popularity in Botswana.
A fusion of Setswana and Shona, the track highlights concerns over cultural erosion and calls for the preservation of African cultural values.
