Bulawayo councillor calls for solar streetlights amid poor lighting

BULAWAYO, OCT 9, (SOUTHERN EYE LIVE ): BULAWAYO City Council has been urged to consider installing solar-powered streetlights and tower lights amid concerns over poor public lighting, vandalism, load shedding and the cost of electrical spares.

The proposal was raised by proportional representation councillor Melisa Mabeza during discussions on the public lighting report, according to recent council minutes.

Mabeza expressed concern over poor public lighting in the city, highlighting its importance to public safety.

The minutes state that “Street lighting played a vital role in public safety.”

She noted that most tower lights and streetlights were electrical, exposing them to challenges that included vandalism and load shedding.

“Electrical spares were also expensive,” the minutes state.

Mabeza proposed that the city consider solar-powered alternatives, with the minutes recording that “She proposed that the City embarks on installing solar tower lights and streetlights.”

The report also notes that “Solar lights were now recommended worldwide.”

Ward 25 councillor Aleck Ndlovu concurred with Mabeza’s concerns.

Council subsequently resolved that the recommendation of the Environmental Management and Engineering Services Committee be adopted.

However, the minutes do not specify whether the resolution approved the installation of solar-powered lights, the budget required or a timeline for implementation.
