Njube Spurs eyes Division One football

Njube Spurs’ hopes for promotion to the Southern Region Soccer League are growing brighter

ZIFA Bulawayo Province Division Two hotshots Njube Spurs’ hopes for promotion to the Southern Region Soccer League are growing brighter, and the club’s chairman Trust “Kofi” Chizunza remains optimistic about their chances.

Speaking after their impressive 4-0 drubbing of Sihlengeni last Saturday afternoon, Chuzunza said their target is to bring back top-flight football to Njube.

“It’s been a long time since we have had a team from Njube playing in the top flight. So that’s our intention,” said Chizunza.

“We want to bring Division One football back to Njube, right at this stadium.

“We want these boys to play together in the first division and make this community proud.

“They have been playing together since Under 12s, so it will be befitting for them to play if we get promoted.”

Reflecting on the club’s journey, Chizunza highlighted the team’s long-standing cohesion as the bedrock of their current success.

“The journey has been long,” he said.

“These boys have been playing together since 2017.

“It’s not surprising to see them perform like this.”

He said unity and discipline have been their driving forcedespite their financial constraints.

“I cannot say we are a financially stable side, but our nickname is Order,” Chizunza said.

“We have faced so many challenges as a club; the community as parents cannot chip in financially, so we do have our struggles there, but order and unity of purpose has pushed us further.”

This unity was on full display during their latest match, where Spurs dismissed 10th-placed Sihlengeni 4-0 at their Dessert Stadium hunting ground.

The victory closed the gap to just four points between them and league leaders Khami United.

After 23 matches, Spurs sit on 51 points and are the league’s top scorers with an impressive 53 goals.

Khami are on 55 points.

The team’s firepower was exemplified by their star player this season, Michael “Mandoza” Kachingwe, who scored a hat-trick after Mbongeni Ngwenya had opened the scoring for John Mabayisa’s side, who displayed an exciting brand of football.

The community has a rich football heritage, having once produced Premier League side Njube Sundowns, which birthed exciting talents such as Stanford “Collymore” Ncube, Evans Chikwaikwai, the late Maphias Webb, and goalkeeper Maurani Phiri, amongst others.

With seven matches remaining in the season, Spurs is scheduled to play six of those final games at their favourite hunting ground, a factor that will undoubtedly boost their promotion campaign.
