Imbizo FC goalkeeper joins Namibian topflight side

PSL champions Scottland, offloaded almost their entire squad after gaining promotion to the top flight in 2024.

Zimbabwean goalkeeper, Arnold Chimombe, has signed for Namibian Premier League side Okahandja United, hoping the move will finally open the doors that the local Premiership has kept shut.

The 22 year-old shot-stopper, who helped army side Imbizo FC avoid relegation from the Zifa Southern Region Soccer League last season, sad the move was a direct response to the limited pathways for young talent in the domestic top flight.

“In Zimbabwe, it is hard to break into the Premier League because teams are not looking at the lower divisions,” Chimombe said.

“There is too much recycling of the same players.

“To be recognised, you have to first go outside the country and prove yourself, and then maybe they will see you.

“It’s a frustrating system for those of us coming up from the junior leagues and lower divisions.”

Chimombe’s comments highlighted a long-standing grievance among emerging talents in Zimbabwean football, where Premier Soccer League (PSL) clubs often favour experienced over untested players from the lower tiers, regardless of their potential.

This trend is further evidenced when newly-promoted teams often discard the players instrumental in their successful promotion campaigns.

The problem is compounded by a lack of scouting.

In the Southern Region Soccer League (SRSL), few premiership teams send their technical staff to watch matches, making it nearly impossible for players in the division one league to be spotted and signed.

Chimombe’s journey, which includes development at the Young Flying Stars Sports Academy (YFSSA) and a stint with Pilikwe United in Botswana, has yet to include premiership football in his home country, a key factor that influenced his decision to take the Namibian route.

“My goal is to play in the Zimbabwean Premiership; that is the dream,” Chimombe said.

“But the route now is through Namibia.

“I am hopeful that this move will open the right doors and prove my quality, so I can return to play at home at the highest level.”

Chimombe has signed a one-year deal with Okahandja United and is currently awaiting his international clearance before making his debut.
