MUKURU has renewed its headline partnership with St John’s College for the 2026 Derby Day Sports Festival, set for April 27 to May 2, with the fifth edition coinciding with the school’s 40th anniversary.
The financial services company returns as title sponsor for a second consecutive year, leading a sponsorship roster that includes Health International and Titan Law.
The week-long festival will again run under the St John’s Mukuru Derby Day banner at the Harare school.
Designed to condense the pressure of traditional school rivalries into a single venue over seven days, the festival has become a fixture on Zimbabwe’s youth sports calendar.
This year’s draw features 49 teams: 19 in rugby, 14 in football, and 16 in hockey split evenly between boys and girls.
Schools are set to travel from Matabeleland, Manicaland, Midlands, Mashonaland Country Districts, and Harare, with St Alban’s from South Africa also confirmed.
Organisers expect crowds of around 15 000 across the week.
The event’s profile as a scouting ground has grown.

Last year’s edition was attended by the Sharks Academy, and several participants have since moved into professional development structures.
Mukuru Zimbabwe CEO Doug Tait-Knight linked the company’s return to St John’s 40-year milestone and the shared values between brand and festival.
“At Mukuru, our mission is built on the resilience and ambition of the people we serve across the continent. We see that same spirit in these young athletes,” Tait-Knight said.
“Returning as title sponsor during St John’s milestone 40th year is a proud moment for us.
“This festival is more than a sporting event; it’s a high-performance platform where the next generation of African talent is discovered.

St John’s College director of sport Chris Fourie described the relationship as more than transactional.
“Our relationship with Mukuru is one we are incredibly proud of. Their support goes beyond sponsorship,” he said.
“It’s a genuine partnership that has helped us build this into a flagship event. Together, we are creating something truly special for our schools, our players, and the wider community.”
Meanwhile, rugby VIP tickets went on sale at the St John’s College bursar’s office from Wednesday.
General admission for rugby and hockey will be sold at the gate on match days, while football carries no entry fee.
Hockey starts at 6:45am daily, with rugby gates opening at 8am.
Mukuru, which services over 17 million customers across 70 countries and 500+ remittance corridors, counts the Derby Day festival among several sports properties in its portfolio.
These include partnerships with the Zimbabwe Cricket Team, the Mukuru Four Nations Tournament and Malawi’s Under-21 netball side.
Founded in 1986, St John’s College enters its fifth decade with a reputation built on academic and sporting balance.
The school has consistently produced athletes who transition to provincial and national structures.
