The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has moved swiftly to punish Bulawayo Chiefs following scenes of total disorder at the conclusion of their Chibuku Super Cup first-round defeat to Hardrock at Chahwanda Stadium on Sunday.
Chiefs assistant coach Agent Sawu and midfielder Melikhaya Ncube have both been handed $500 fines for their roles in the post-match melee, while the club itself was hit with a $2,000 sanction.
Tensions boiled over immediately after the final whistle of the encounter, which saw Chiefs defeated 1-0 courtesy of a Tino Muringai penalty. Incensed by the decision to award the spot-kick, Chiefs players and members of the technical staff mobbed referee Lawrence Zimhondi and his assistant officials to protest the match officiating.
The league confirmed the disciplinary measures in a statement this morning, noting that the individuals and the club were charged under Order 15 of the PSL Standing Orders, Offences and Fines.
The regulatory clause strictly forbids clubs, officials, and players from engaging in acts that disrupt proceedings before, during, or after a fixture, covering aggressive behaviour, violence, and general unbecoming conduct.
Reiterating its stance on touchline disorder, the governing body declared, “The Premier Soccer League remains committed to maintaining discipline, professionalism and respect at all its matches.”
