One of the event organisers, Derwin Joe said there was a lot of talent in Bulawayo that has not been recognised and this will work as a platform to put upcoming artistes on the map.

“We want to appreciate the new generation unlike the National Arts and Merit Awards (Nama), which focuses on the old guys,” he said.

The awards were launched at an event at Kudu Bar last Saturday, where they released the full list of categories and nominees.

The categories include outstanding gospel group, hip-hop artist, live band, producer, video of the year and people’s choice award among, others.

The launch also featured a red carpet parade, which was graced by many Bulawayo artistes and socialites.

Nominations were based on the material released on radio and television, live shows and also exposure on social networks such as Facebook and YouTube.

Nominees should have been raised Bualwayo and started their music careers.

“We have organised an eight-member board that helped with the nominations and also voting for the winners of some of the categories.

“We have noticed that if we let people vote on social networks such as Facebook, non—deserving artists will win because of popularity and having more friends on the site,” Joe said.

Bulawayo hosted this year’s Nama awards early this year.
