ONE person died on the spot and five of her family members were seriously injured when the vehicle they were travelling in veered off the road and rammed onto a tree along the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Road at the weekend, police confirmed yesterday. Report Pamela Mhlanga

Matabeleland North provincial police spokesperson Inspector Siphiwe Makonese said the incident, which she said was a result of driving without due care and attention, occurred at the 94km peg on Saturday at around 4:30am.

“A Ford Ranger single cab pick-up driven and owned by Tendai Murinyu (40), who resides in Bindura, was travelling from Bulawayo towards Victoria Falls when the driver suddenly lost control of the vehicle,” she said.

Makonese said when the driver lost control of the vehicle, it veered off the road to the right and hit a tree, killing one passenger instantly and injuring five others.

A report was made to Insuza traffic police who attended the scene and investigations were still in progress. Makonese said the injured were taken to St Luke’s Hospital for treatment, where they are still admitted and the body of the deceased, identified as 52-year old Mary Murinyu, was taken to the hospital mortuary for a post mortem.

Makonese warned drivers to always be on the alert when travelling, as lack of attention resulted in unnecessary loss of lives.
