Talent Mthunzi and Shelly Ncube, whose ages were not given in court, had pleaded guilty to illegal gold possession when they appeared before Lupane magistrate Aelene Munamati on Monday.

The magistrate convicted and sentenced them to five years in jail each.

Prosecutor Lungisani Dube told the court that on June 29 last year, the two left Hope Fountain Mine going to Lupane Centre without money. While at Lupane Centre they became hungry and entered a shop with gold only worth $1,10.

They asked the shop attendants to exchange it for bread so they could eat.

The shop attendants alerted police officers who arrested the two. Twitter feedback @silasnkala
