The deceased’s sister, Thembelihle Sibanda, said she last saw her brother, Zithinte, on Saturday evening when he was heading to Esiqongweni, a bar in the suburb, to look for his friend.

Witnesses at the scene said the man left the bar in the evening alone, carrying a bottle of alcohol going to another bottle store in the suburb.

“He was someone who loved drinking and would come home when drunk,” Thembelihle said. “This morning, I saw people rushing to the corner to see a dead body and when I got there I recognised my brother lying on the road lifeless.”

Thembelihle said the deceased had two children. His wife had travelled to her rural home.

The body was taken to Mpilo Central Hospital for a post mortem. “We can’t really say what happened. We are waiting for the results of the post mortem from the police,” Thembelihle added.

Some residents said Sibanda’s body had deep wounds at the back and a cut on the head, which made them suspect that he had been attacked.

A wallet with his national identity card and a few bottles of beer were found at the scene.
