Thembakuye Khumalo (30) last week appeared before Gwanda magistrate Arafat Kozanai who sentenced him to 12 months in prison for theft.

The magistrate suspended three months of the sentence for five years on condition that he does not commit a similar offence within the period.

A further three months were suspended on condition Khumalo repays his ex-wife $370 by the end of September. Prosecutor Edward Ndlovu had told the court that on August 8 at around 2pm, Khumalo went to his former wife Sikhangezile Moyo’s house while she was away and stole $2 000.

Moyo discovered the theft when she returned home at 9pm and reported the matter to the police, leading to Khumalo’s arrest.

Police recovered $430 in cash and clothes worth $1 200 bought using the stolen money.
