HWAHWA Prison is discharging raw sewage into Whitewaters Dam making it expensive to invest in the water body as a source of potable water, German Development Corporation (GIZ) technical expert seconded to the Gweru City Council, Boris Bisa, has revealed. STEPHEN CHADENGA OWN CORRESPONDENT

Bias told councillors at a meeting on Wednesday that Whitewaters was heavily polluted making it uneconomic to invest in the dam as a source of water.

“Whitewaters Dam is polluted with raw sewage from Hwahwa Prison,” Bisa said. “This makes the dam heavily polluted and uneconomic to invest as a source of potable water,” he said.

Gweru City Council had asked GIZ to assist financially in ensuring Whitewaters Dam supplies water to the city.

But Bisa said it was more economic for the city to concentrate on preventing water losses through attending to leaking taps and pumps as well as introducing a tight water rationing schedule.

Gweru treasurer Edgar Mwedzi said the city required $300 000 for filters and pumps to draw water from Whitewaters.

Bisa said it was unsustainable to invest such an amount in a polluted dam like Whitewaters adding that such an amount could be used for a massive educational awareness campaigns.
