Eyewitnesses told Southern Eye that Dube was owed $80 by a cousin and the problem started when he arrived home from Nyamandlovu where he operates a shop.

Dube first had a heated argument with his cousin over the money.

The two fought close to the Old Pumula shopping centre in the morning in full view of vendors and other passers-by.

Dube left the shops and went home where he locked himself in a bedroom and hanged himself.

A family spokesperson told Southern Eye it was hard for them to come to terms with what had transpired and were still in shock.

“As a family, we don’t know what to say because this is very painful. How could our brother do such a thing? To tell you the truth, we are not thinking straight right now because of this incident that has befallen us,” the spokesperson who refused to be identified said.

The spokesperson said the family was yet to speak to the cousin Dube fought with to obtain details on the matter because they were still in shock.

“We are yet to sit as a family. I cannot shed more light on this issue now and as you can see, police officers are here trying to retrieve the body of the deceased and they need our assistance,” the spokesperson said.

When a Southern Eye news crew visited the residence on Monday members of the community were milling around the house waiting for the police to remove Dube’s body from the room.

Police at the scene declined to comment.
