Sithandazile Sibanda (23) was not asked to plead when he appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Takundwa Witness Mtetwa yesterday facing a charge of attempted murder.

The court heard that on December 30 last year at around midnight, Sibanda arrived home and found his wife Caroline Arinesto (19) asleep. Sibanda knocked on the window and allegedly told Arinesto that he wanted to kill her.

It is the State’s case that he opened the window and climbed into the room where his wife was.

Arinesto tried to flee, but Sibanda gave chase and caught up with her and then stabbed her three times, on the shoulder, on the left arm and on the right side of the eye.

The State said Arinesto screamed for help during the stabbings resulting in Sibanda fleeing from the scene leaving the knife behind.

A neighbour, who was awakened by the screams, assisted Arinesto to file a report at the police station before she was taken to hospital for treatment.

A medical report before the court states that Arinesto sustained serious injuries.
