Joyce Mdlongwa (66) and her daughter Loveness Lillian Sanga (36) appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Gladmore Mushove facing charges of fraud and were each granted $200 bail and told to return to court for trial on January 23.

The court heard that Mdlongwa was once married to the late Edwill Chinembiri, but the two divorced in 1978.

It is alleged that on October 9 last year, Mdlongwa obtained a letter of administration for the estate of the late Chinembiri after two of her relatives had lied in their affidavits that Chinembiri had left the house in her custody.

It later emerged that the two relatives had lied in their affidavits and have since been arrested.

The court heard that Mdlongwa and Sanga used the same bogus letter of administration to sell the house to Stuart Woods of Northend, Bulawayo.

Mdlongwa allegedly used the forged letter of estate administration to write a power of attorney authorising Sanga to sell the house on her behalf.

Sanga then sold the house to Woods for $12 500 and promised him that he would take occupancy of the house after three months.

Woods paid the money and waited for three months to occupy the house, but discovered that he had been defrauded.

He reported the matter to the police, leading to the arrest of the two.
